Hoosier Academies Kicks off School Year With Expanded Learning Opportunities

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — For its second year, Hoosier Academies opened its doors to hundreds of excited students and families on August 31, 2009. Serving grades K through 11, Hoosier Academies offers a unique blend of traditional brick-and-mortar public schooling combined with online learning through its hybrid model school. Hoosier Academies and the K12 curriculum offer a high-quality, tuition-free public education that enables a learning experience individualized for each child.

“Teachers have been preparing all summer for another successful school year,” said Lynn Black, Hoosier Academies Head of Schools. “We’re also thrilled to be able to offer another alternative to traditional schooling, through the endorsement of the Indiana Department of Education, to pilot a virtual charter school.”

On Thursday, August 6, 2009, the Indiana Department of Education announced it had selected Indiana-based Hoosier Academies to operate a virtual charter school pilot program for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years.

Hoosier Academies was granted funding for grades 1 through 5, each grade accommodating 40 students. The Department of Education may choose a second entity to operate an additional virtual charter school during the 2010-11 school year, when the total number of students allowed by the General Assembly to participate in the program increases to 500.

The Hoosier Academies VPS is currently accepting applications, with an enrollment deadline of Friday, September 11, 2009.
