Data Increase of 48%, Participation of 70 Distinct Hospitals Mark Year of Expansion for Indiana Health Information Exchange
INDIANAPOLIS, July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — 2010 was a year of
unprecedented growth for the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE),
according to a new report released today by the organization. At the end of
2010, IHIE counted 70 distinct hospitals, long-term health facilities and health
centers as part of its robust, secure network. It also launched an impressive
$16 million federally-funded collaboration to link the access of health
information to better patient outcomes.

With support from its partner, the Regenstrief Institute, this significant
increase in participation in IHIE led to a total of 3.3 billion pieces of
clinical information in the network at the end of 2010, which marks an increase
from 2.2 billion in 2009.
This data increase directly impacted IHIE’s next-generation quality effort,
called the Quality Health First® Program. As one of the nation’s only quality
analytics services connected to a health information exchange, the increase in
clinical data enables IHIE to generate credible and valuable reports to
physicians that help them monitor and proactively manage patients with chronic
diseases and patients needing other interventions, such as cancer screenings.
Other highlights from the report include:
— Since its launch in 2004, IHIE has delivered a total of over 77 million
clinical results; over 17 million were delivered in 2010.
— Over 22 distinct health systems participate in IHIE.
— Over one million patients are monitored in IHIE’s quality analytics
program in 2010, helping physicians monitor and proactively manage
patients with chronic diseases.
— An increase of four percent in the number of diabetic patients in
Indiana receiving appropriate follow-up care to help manage their
disease.
— IHIE received the largest portion of investment from the $50 million in
Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act
funding awarded to Indiana entities; $16 million was invested in IHIE
for the Central Indiana Beacon Community.
“There are dynamic changes underway in the health information exchange sector,
and the Indiana Health Information Exchange is poised to take full advantage of
the growth we experienced in 2010 to help inform and drive these changes,” said
Harold J. Apple, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Indiana Health
Information Exchange. “As always, we will strive to support better utilization
of healthcare resources, enhanced safety and greater efficiencies so that all
patients receive the best care possible.”
