AT&T Expands Mobile Broadband Wireless Capacity in Lebanon and Thorntown

LEBANON, Ind., Sept. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Customers in Lebanon and Thorntown
are expected to experience improved mobile broadband and voice performance as a
result of continued investment and innovation by AT&T*. The company announced
today that it has completed a key initiative in its ongoing efforts to enhance
the wireless capacity and performance of its mobile broadband network in the
area.

The network enhancement adds a new layer of frequency, also known as a
“carrier,” to a cell site between Lebanon and Thorntown to more efficiently
manage available spectrum and increase mobile broadband capacity. The expansion
helps manage ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services by allocating
more network resources for AT&T’s mobile broadband network.

“AT&T is committed to investing in our customer experience in Boone County and
across the state,” said AT&T Indiana President George S. Fleetwood. “Boone
County is a strategic location for companies to grow and expand and we hope our
capital investment will make it an even more attractive location for future
economic development.”

This network improvement is part of AT&T’s plan to invest in the $20-billion
range in its national wireless and wireline networks in 2011. AT&T invested more
than $225 million in its wireless and wireline networks from 2008 to 2010 in the
greater Indianapolis area and nearly $925 million statewide. This month, AT&T
also announced upgrades to its wireless network in Avon, Danville, Pittsboro,
Plainfield, Sheridan, Westfield, and Zionsville; and in the Indianapolis airport
area.

“We want you to have an extraordinary experience whether sharing videos and
photos, watching a movie, checking the latest scores, or keeping your business
mobile on your AT&T device,” said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general
manager for AT&T Indiana and Michigan. “Smartphones, tablets and laptops are
continuing to drive unprecedented demand for wireless access everywhere. We’re
investing in a combination of technologies in Lebanon and Thorntown to meet
these needs and ensure an advanced broadband experience for all our customers.”

AT&T’s mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership
Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most
widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best
international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice
service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries.

AT&T also operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network** with nearly 27,000
hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 190,000 hotspots globally
through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our
entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn’t
count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.

AT&T recently launched “Focus: Indianapolis,” which provides visitors a peek
into AT&T’s wireless network enhancements made since the beginning of the year.
Enhancements include new cell sites, broadband speed upgrades, capacity upgrades
and network connection upgrades. The site also provides a map of area AT&T
stores, a map of area Wi-Fi hotspots, useful tips, a localized Twitter handle
